šŸ˜OK..NOW WHAT? (your Q & A)
Why Your Dog Hears You, & Doesn’t Listen.

You call your dog, they sniff a bush. You say ā€œsitā€, they chase a leaf. It’s not personal, but it sure feels that way.

So what’s going on? Dogs ignore us for all kinds of reasons, & thanks to new research, we now know they can hear us just fine… even in monotone, even over background noise. So if they’re not responding, it’s less likely about hearing. It’s about choice.

Here’s why your dog might be tuning you out:

  • New place, new rules. Dogs don’t always remember cues in unfamiliar spots.

  • Too many distractions. BBQ smells & animal sightings can beat your voice at times.

  • Mixed messages. ā€œSitā€ & ā€œsit-sit-sit-SITā€ aren’t the same cue.

  • Feeling nervous. Shy dogs may shut down instead of engage.

  • Relationship hiccups. Past experiences can make dogs wary of interaction.

  • Getting Older. Their hearing sensitivity may be changing, high & middle frequencies tend to be affected first.

What to do when your dog ignores you:

  • Use one cue, one word. ā€œSitā€ means sit. Not ā€œsit-sit-sitā€ or ā€œget down.ā€

  • Keep it consistent. Same word, same tone, same context. Every time.

  • Reward like it’s your job. Dogs respond to motivation, not repetition.

  • Train in new places. Skills don’t transfer automatically. Practice everywhere.

  • Lower the bar in busy settings. Distractions dilute focus. Adjust expectations.

  • Rebuild recall with rewards, then fade them. Start with treats every time they come. Once reliable, gradually reduce food & reinforce with praise or play.

  • Know they can hear you (unless hearing affected). New research shows dogs detect familiar words even in monotone or noisy environments.

  • Watch for fear or stress. A shut-down dog isn’t ignoring you, they’re overwhelmed.

  • Check for age-related changes. Hearing loss, cognitive decline, or pain can impact responsiveness.

  • Read their body language. ā€œIgnoringā€ might be confusion, discomfort, or uncertainty.

  • Ask your vet if things shift suddenly. Rule out medical causes before retraining behavior.

Keep cues consistent & meet your dog where they are, emotionally & physically. They’re not blowing you off to be rude. They’re just being a dog, & with a few tweaks, you’ll be back on the same wavelength in no time.

🧠🌿WOOF WELLBEING
What Every Dog Parent Should Know About Water.

New research reveals hidden risks. So what you can do to protect your pup?

Most dog parents use tap water without a second thought. But a recent study by a team from the Dog Aging Project, that involved testing drinking water from 178 dogs living in homes with private wells across 10 U.S. states, found that water from homes not on city supply, mostly rural or older properties, often contains metals like lead, arsenic, & copper.

This is concerning for living in or travelling to these areas. These can quietly build up in your dog’s body over time, increasing the risk of kidney damage, digestive issues, & even long-term organ problems.

Here’s what matters most:

  • Lead & arsenic are toxic. Even small amounts can affect your dog’s brain, behavior, & immune system.

  • Copper & sodium can strain organs. Especially in older dogs or those with heart or kidney conditions.

  • Basic filters aren’t enough. Only advanced systems, like reverse osmosis systems (used to purify water), showed a link to better dog health.

If your dog drinks water where you’re unsure about your home’s plumbing or filtration, consider getting your water tested. It’s simple, affordable, & could prevent years of silent exposure. Your dog doesn’t get to choose what’s in the bowl, but you do. It’s a reminder that clean water is as important to them as it is to us. šŸ¶šŸ’§

🦷What 80% Of Us Miss About Our Dog’s Teeth

Over 80% of dogs show signs of dental disease by age three, & most dog parents don’t even know it’s happening. Rotten teeth aren’t just about bad breath. They can cause serious pain, stop your dog from eating, & quietly damage the heart, kidneys, & more.

If your dog’s mouth hasn’t had a check-up lately, this is your nudge.

What to look for:

  • Bad breath that smells truly foul

  • Yellow or brown teeth, or missing ones

  • Red, swollen gums or bleeding

  • Chewing on one side or refusing food

  • Drooling more than usual

  • Sneezing or nasal discharge

  • Sudden shyness or face sensitivity

What you can do:

  • Check your dog’s mouth weekly…lift the lip & look

  • Brush daily with dog-safe toothpaste & if that is tricky for you then as regularly as possible, or arrange for your vet or professionally trained groomer to clean them

  • Use VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) approved dental chews & diets

  • Avoid hard bones or antlers that can crack teeth

  • Schedule regular vet dental exams

  • Act fast if you spot pain, extractions may be needed

Dental disease doesn’t stay in the mouth. It spreads silently, hurts deeply, & is 100% preventable with the right care. So it’s more than just looking after that adorable grin… it’s vital for their health.

šŸ¤”PAWSE TO REMEMBER

Clean dogs food bowls daily.  Preferably with soap, rinse with water & dry. Dogs like us are living beings with bodies that are susceptible to bacteria & other agents that might grow in their bowls & eating areas.

šŸ’ŽPROTECTION FOR PUPS

The hidden costs of chronic pet conditions

Many pet owners don’t realize that chronic illnesses (like diabetes or allergies) can cost far more over a pet’s lifetime than a single emergency.

Pet insurance could save you thousands in repeat treatments and costs, so you’re not forced to choose between your pet’s health and other important expenses. Check out Money’s best pet insurance list to find plans starting at $10/month.

🧐FACT or FLUFF??...Answer.  FACT

Back in 2013 a two year study representing 37 breeds found that dogs are sensitive to variations in the Earth’s magnetic field & prefer to poop along the north-south axis. They also avoided pooping along the east-west axis altogether. The reason remains unclear.
