😏OK..NOW WHAT? (your Q & A)
Why do dogs like some dogs & hate others?

Why do some dogs seem to love certain dogs while being totally uninterested or even aggressive toward others? I’d hazard a guess that this question has popped into the mind of every dog parent!

Just like us, dogs have their own personalities & preferences. Let’s dig into why your pup might pick & choose their furry chums:

  1. Body Language: Dogs are pros at reading each other’s signals. If another dog is too hyper or acting dominant, your pup might not want to engage.

  2. Scent Sensitivity: With their impressive sense of smell, dogs can sniff out scents that remind them of past experiences.

A smell that triggers a bad memory could cause them to avoid certain dogs.

  3. Past Experiences: If your dog had a rough encounter with a specific breed or type of dog, they might shy away from, or be aggressive to, others that look or smell similar.

This is not unusual, & personally, our Staffy has a bit of this that started after another dog harassed him at dog holiday boarding.😒

  4. Gender Preferences: Some dogs may prefer to hang out with dogs of the opposite sex, while others might not care about gender at all.

  5. Protectiveness: If your pooch feels possessive over toys or you, they might react defensively to other dogs getting too close.

  6. Your ‘Vibes’: Dogs are great at picking up on our emotions. If you’re anxious or nervous around other dogs, your pup might feel that way too.

It’s perfectly normal for dogs to have their favorites & not so favorites. Paying attention to what influences your pup’s social behavior can help you navigate their interactions with other dogs.

🧠🌿WOOF WELLBEING
How much should your dog drink?-& getting them to drink more.

Keeping your dog hydrated is essential for their health, but sometimes they just don’t drink enough water.

There a many dogs whose water intake needs to be watched & that need to be encouraged to drink more. Some dogs have drinking quirks, for instance they will only drink from a tap or when their water bowl is freshly filled. (OK, our pooch is one of them🙄)

A good rule of thumb is that your dog should drink about one ounce (0.3 liter) of water for every pound (0.5 kg) they weigh each day. For example, a 25-pound (11.3kg) dog needs about 3 cups (0.75 liters) of water daily.

If your pup isn’t drinking as much as they should, let’s take a sniff as to why that might be:

  • Diet: Dogs eating wet or canned food often consume more moisture & may drink less water.

  • Lifestyle: Sedentary dogs, such as senior pets or those that stay indoors, might not feel the need to drink as much.

  • Health Issues: Conditions like bladder infections, kidney disease, or diabetes can affect a dog's desire to drink.

  • Age: Older dogs may simply lose interest in drinking water over time.

  • Weather: Cooler temperatures can lead to decreased water intake.

  • Exercise: Less active dogs may not be motivated to drink.

  • Habits: As said earlier, some dogs are fussy about how, where & even when they drink water.

  • Dislike: Some dogs just don’t like to drink water much even though they need to.

The signs of not drinking enough & dehydration include:

  • Dry, sticky, or pale gums

  • Dry, sunken eyeballs

  • Dry nose & mouth

  • Thick saliva

  • Panting more than usual

  • Loss of skin elasticity

  • Listlessness, lethargy

  • Pacing or drooling

There are some easy ways to encourage your dog to drink more like these:

  • Keep their water bowl clean & fresh.

  • Experiment with different bowls or even a pet water fountain.

  • Add flavor with low-sodium broth or dog-safe fruits.

  • Offer ice cubes as a treat.

  • Place multiple water bowls around your home.

  • Reward or praise them when they drink.

If you’re still concerned about your dog's hydration, it’s always a good idea to check with your vet for personalized advice. It is very important for all dogs that they are well hydrated to match their surroundings.

🍦What is ‘brain freeze’ in dogs & how to fix it.

Decisions, Decisions💗

Just like us our pups, who love a cold treat, can experience brain freeze, that sudden headache from eating something too cold too quickly. Here’s some ‘need to knows’ about brain freeze in dogs & how to help them.

  • Signs of Brain Freeze: Keep an eye out for behaviors like head shaking, drooling, or even sneezing. If your dog suddenly refuses to eat or seems restless, they might be feeling the effects of brain freeze.

  • Preventing Brain Freeze: To help your pup avoid this uncomfortable sensation, try giving cold treats slowly. This way, they can enjoy their tasty snacks without the sudden jolt of pain.

  • & Speaking of Cold Treats for Dogs: It’s okay for dogs to have cold foods like dog-safe ice cream or frozen fruit, but always check that the ingredients are safe for them to eat. Some common human foods can be harmful.

If your dog experiences brain freeze, give them a moment to recover. It’s usually short-lived & not harmful, but if symptoms persist, a vet visit is a good idea.

🤔PAWSE TO REMEMBER

Eye Care. Check your dog's eyes for redness or discharge regularly particularly at the change of seasons. Take note if they start rubbing their eyes with their paws or start rubbing their face eye area against some object. Consult your vet if you notice any abnormalities.
