How can I tell if my dog is a genius?

We all think our pooches are so smart & clever, but just how smart?

Well, according to research supported since 2021, there's a simple test that can help you find out!

Scientists have discovered that some dogs have an incredible ability to learn the names of new objects quickly. So, how can you tell if your dog is one of these genius pups?

Here’s the test:

Now, before we get started, don’t worry if your pup doesn’t have this ability, it might just be down to their breed or previous experience (all pooches have the talent of being adorable & that’s all that matters🥰).

Part One.

1. Setup. If you haven’t already, say the name of each of your pups toys when you give it to them & when they are playing with it.

2. Toy knowledge. Put your dogs toys together & ask them to bring each toy in turn.

3. Introducing new toys: Once it’s clear your pooch knows the name of it’s toys introduce two new toys & place them one at a time in amongst the known toys & ask your pup to retrieve them.

Part Two.

1. Introduce new toys. Show your pooch a new toy, say it’s name & allow your dog to play with it. Repeat this four times each with two different toys.

2. New toy knowledge. Place the new toys away from other toys your dog knows & ask your pup to choose a toy by name.

3. Memory retention test: The memory retention of the new names is tested after 10 minutes & then again after an hour to see how well your dog retains the information.

Note, that in the study, memory of new toys decayed a lot after 10 minutes & almost completely after one hour.

This shows, like all pup teaching, the new learning needs more reinforcement if it is to be retained which we can enrich through play & social time.
